We tend to see a doctor when something hurts. But many lung conditions develop slowly and cause few symptoms at first. A regular chest check-up can pick up problems early, when treatment works best.
Who benefits most?
- Current or former smokers
- People with a cough, wheeze or breathlessness that has lasted for weeks
- People with asthma, COPD or allergies who need regular monitoring
- Those exposed to dust, fumes or chemicals at work
- Anyone with a family history of lung disease
What happens during a check-up?
The doctor will ask about your symptoms, habits and work, and examine your chest. Depending on what is found, you may be advised a lung function test (spirometry), a chest X-ray, or other tests.
Why early detection matters
Conditions like asthma and COPD are much easier to manage when they are diagnosed early, and treatment can prevent lung function from declining further. For infections, early treatment helps prevent complications.
If you have been ignoring a symptom, or it has been a while since your lungs were checked, a short consultation can give you clarity and peace of mind.
